Description:

Beaded Tape-loomed Necklace, Ohio, dated 1835, incorporating black beads bordered by light blue beads, pictorial and geometric designs in white, and inscription "OHIO MAY THE II 1835 WTYSR," lg. 53 in.

Provenance: Purchased at an Iowa auction.

Note: It has been suggested that there may be a Church of Latter Day Saints connection with this necklace. For example, the letters "WTYSR" on the necklace might be an acronym for "Would That Ye Shall Remember," a phrase used in the Book of Mormon. The date in early May 1835 is an important one in the Latter Day Saints calendar, as it is associated with the day that the twelve Mormon apostles left on their first mission for the Church. Lastly, the image of the temple bears a resemblance to Kirtland Temple in Ohio, begun in 1833 and completed in 1836.
Estimate $400-600
