Description:

Newton Mining Tacheometer, Cornwall, England, 19th century, lacquered brass instrument with sighting scope mounted to the vertical half-circle engraved 0-100 on one side and "Underlie in 6 a Fathom" on the other, 6-in. dia. horizontal silvered compass engraved "Newton late Wilson/Camborne, Cornwall" with dual levels, vernier scale and needle, and interchangeable sighting vane, housed in the original fitted box with tripod and mounting bracket.
