William J. Young Tunnel Transit, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lacquered brass instrument with 15-in. scope mounted to a cross bar with lower spirit level, dual tapered pillars with cross bar engraved "Wm. J. Young/Philadelphia," all housed in the original mahogany case.
Note: Tunnel transit made about 1830, with leveling base used in early Pennsylvania railroad tunnels.
