Gimbaled Surveyor's Compass, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, c. 1849, lacquered brass instrument with gimbaled 5 1/2-in. dia. engraved silvered dial reading "James R. reed & Co./Pittsburgh, Pa./No. 182," internal vernier and circular level, blued-steel needle, and engraved with cardinal and intercardinal points, short sighting vanes and a vertical arc engraved with scale from 90-0-90 with the integrated vernier, lg. 14 in.
