The frame was opened during preview, and the sheet is laid down on heavy pressed paperboard support which seems to be original. The sheet measures 14 7/8 x 18 inches. There are scattered fox marks to the sky and toning to the edges of the sheet. The reverse of the supporting paperboard bears a gummed label with the artist's name and the title "The Pope's Palace at Avignon" and also has remnants of an old backing paper, a scrap of which is inscribed with the artist's dates. There is a collector's stamp "DB" within a circle in the lower left of the backing board and also on the l.l. corner of the back of the frame. This mark is listed in Lugt as L.3175, but the collector is not identified. Lugt describes the mark as 20th century, and notes that is has been documented on works by James Ensor and also appeared in red ink on a Renoir sketch offered in a Swiss auction.
