Description:

Daniel Huntington (American, 1816-1906)

Portrait of Katrina Van Tassel
Inscribed and possibly signed "Katrina Van Tassel/...untington" in pencil on the stretcher, identified on a presentation plaque, and with a canvas stencil from Goupil & Company, New York, on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 12 x 10 in. (30.0 x 25.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Minor retouch, frame abrasion, surface grime.

N.B. Daniel Huntington created a larger painting showing Katrina Van Tassel paring apples while Ichabod Crane looks over her shoulder as an illustration for Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1861, to which the painting at hand clearly relates.
Estimate $1,000-1,500

Provenance: Private collection, Deerfield, Massachusetts.
Framed dimensions are 17 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Frame missing many of the little beads that surround the perimeter.

Stretcher also bears an illegible monogram stamp with two letters within a circle and the incised number "5051."

The retouch is minimal and consists of a few brush strokes to the apron of the sitter and possibly to the sitter's earrings (although the latter may be only the brown pigment showing slight fluorescence). Frame abrasions with paint losses to upper right edge.
