Louis Tielemans (Belgian, 1826-1856)
Signed "L. Tielemans" l.r., titled on a presentation plaque.

Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection.
Upon further research, it was found that this painting appears to be a copy after Hendrik Jan Augustyn Leys (Belgian, 1815-1869)," Le Bourgmestre Six Chez Rembrandt." The studio depicted is that of Rembrandt, rather than Titian as stated on the presentation plaque. Both artists lived in Antwerp, Leys being 11 years older than Tielemans and one of Antwerp's most celebrated artists of the period. The Leys' work has been reproduced several times as a print, the best known example being a lithograph by Adolphe Mouilleron.
Stenciled "1 5 8 KB" on the reverse. With a gummed label with the typed inscription "Godfrey/775" also on the reverse. Frame with a label with the text crossed out, which may possibly read "Corn Hill/No. 34/..."
Framed dimensions 43 x 37 inches.
