Orrin Freeman (1830-1866) and Others, Album of Historic Photographs of China and Japan, approximately 270 cartes-de-visite, most hand-colored, many inscribed, mostly portraits of Chinese, Japanese, and Middle Eastern people of different occupations, including local officials, military, police, merchants, laborers, Buddhist priests, some exteriors and landscapes.
Provenance: By descent in the family of the photographer.
Note: Freeman is noted as the first American photographer to set up a studio in Yokohama, Japan, in 1860. Before that, he briefly had a studio in Shanghai. See Terry Bennett, Photography in Japan 1853-1912.
