Carved and Polychrome Painted Slide-lid Box, northern New England or possibly southern Quebec, early 19th century, with one canted end, the lid decorated with a stylized bladder campion flower with five angular "teeth" at the top and green and red dots above a red and orange arch of semi-circles, dots, and triangles, all flanked by red and yellow diamonds, against a yellow field, the sides with red and yellow geometric patterns and a central starburst against a dark blue field, the ends with geometric patterning, ht. 5, lg. 11 3/4, wd. 6 1/8 in.
Provenance: Collected near the North Carolina/Georgia border.
Note: At least one similarly carved and painted box is reported with a provenance to Philipsburg, Quebec.
