Description:

Grain-painted Apothecary Cabinet, Chester, Vermont, mid-19th century, top with stepped shelving, above four rows of six drawers, and large compartment with hinged lift-up lid/writing surface below, on cutout sides, original surface, backboards inscribed "A.R. Edson/Chester, Vt.," ht. 76 1/2, wd. 55, dp. 17 1/2 in.

Provenance: According to research done by and information given to the consignor, "[the cabinet] passed down from P'tolemy O'Meara Edson, 1833-1928, of Chester, Vermont." P'tolemy was Assistant Surgeon General in the 1st Vermont Calvary-Army of the Potomac in December 1861. P'tolemy Edson also had a son named P'tolemy, who moved to Roxbury, Massachusetts, in 1866, after the Civil War. In doing research, the consignor found a "Dr. A.R. Edson, (b. 1827- d. 1872)," who practiced medicine in Greenwood, New York, and was a member of the "Eclectic Medical Society & the National Eclectic Medical Association," as found in the Eclectic Medical Journal, 1874, p. 146.
