Watercolor on ivory, 2 3/4 x 2 1/8 in., in an ebonized frame with gilt liner.
Condition: Minor soiling at left edge, not examined out of frame.

Provenance: Catherine Waters Faucon, Milton, Massachusetts; Mrs. J. Mott Hallowell, Wianno, Massachusetts.

Note: Prior to research uncovered by Catherine Waters Faucon and Ruel Pardee Tolman, this miniature was believed to be of John Water's father, Colonel Josiah Waters Jr. Tolman notes in his work that Malbone's account book documents the painting of John Water's portrait in Charleston, South Carolina, for the price of $50.

Literature: Illustrated and discussed in Ruel Pardee Tolman, The Life and Works of Edward Greene Malbone, 1777-1807 (The New-York Historical Society, 1958); New England Miniatures, 1750 to 1850 (Museum of Fine Art: Boston, 1957),Checklist of Miniatures, p. xxii; and The Magazine Antiques, April 1933, p. 131, where it is described as a portrait of Colonel Josiah Waters Jr.
