Description:

Large Ann Plato Needlework Picture of a House, Garden, and Flowers, Hartford, Connecticut, c. 1830-40, depicting a central white clapboard two-story house with flower garden and picket fence in the front below stitched "A I Plato," flanked by large potted flowers, and a cornucopia of flowers, some flowers and elements stitched in white silk and colored with pigment, original frame with later eglomise mat marked "A I Plato," ht. 17, wd. 33 in. (sight).

Note: Ann Plato was born to an African American mother and Native American father c. 1824. Her mother was a seamstress and her father was a farmer. In 1841 she published her only-known work Essays: Including Biographies and Miscellaneous Pieces in Prose and Poetry. Later, she taught at the Free African Schools in the Zion Methodist Episcopal Church until 1847. Her date of death is unknown and evidence suggests that she may have moved to Iowa in later life.
