Early Joined and Paint-decorated Blanket Chest

Early Joined and Paint-decorated Blanket Chest, possibly central Massachusetts, early 18th century, the thin molded hinged pine top lifts above a well with uncovered till, on the joined and paneled box and stile feet, remnants of old red and black paint with geometric designs in white on the front panels, the back panel inscribed "J.N. 1726," (imperfections, repairs), ht. 26, wd. 45, dp. 19 1/2 in.
crack in top loose but mostly held in place by two strips of wood nailed in from the underside, half of the snipe hinges long gone, hole in lid shows evidence that it was covered with a piece of sheet metal or the like at one time, evidence of some sort of missing element underneath, signs of use - chunks missing, scratches, etc.
