Description:

Needlework Sampler "Mary E. Brown," Hampton, New Hampshire, 1818, worked in threads on a green linen ground, consisting of an upper pictorial register, eight alphanumeric rows and the date "January the 5 1818," above a pious verse and maker's name below, 17 x 16 1/4 in. (sight),in a molded giltwood frame.

Provenance: Gary Chickering.

Note: According to a handwritten note provided by the consignor, Mary Brown was the daughter of Lt. Simon Brown, a cavalry officer during the War of 1812. The sampler was purchased by a previous owner directly from the Rye, New Hampshire, house where Mary and her husband Jonathan Walker lived.
