De Cive, which anticipates Hobbes's Leviathan, was originally written in Latin and published in Paris in 1642; it is organized into three sections: Liberty, Dominion, and Religion. Hobbes proceeds from man's natural condition and natural laws, asserts the need for order and a stable government, and then explores the social importance of religion.
