Archaeological-Revival Gold and Glass Necklace, Castellani, c. 1880, the woven gold chain suspending clusters of glass bead grapes and gold leaves, lg. 15 1/2 in., signed.

Provenance: Descendants of the Slade-Smith-Swayze family. Augusta P. Slade gave this necklace to her niece, Helen Slade Smith, on the occasion of the coming out of Helen's daughter, Phyllis, in Morristown, NJ. Augusta P. Slade was one of nine children of Jarvis Slade and Hannah Thomas Patten, born July 30, 1847. Her grandfather, Captain George Patten of Bath, Maine, had a shipbuilding and shipping business and was very successful. Augusta and her sister Emily wintered in Europe for years, returning to Boston usually in April from either Naples or Genoa. It seems likely that Augusta purchased this necklace on one of her European trips.

One bead detached. Other beads loose, with a few missing. Some wear to leaves.
