Shepard, Alan B. Jr. (1923-1998) Photographs, Scrapbook, Freedom 7, Mercury Redstone 3 Mission, May 5, 1961. Oblong landscape format family album containing candid black-and-white and color photographs of Shepard getting suited up in a NASA trailer before the launch; recovery of the capsule by the USS Lake Champlain; including photographs of the crew of the aircraft carrier pointing in excitement; photos taken from the point of view of the Marine helicopter lifting Shepard from the floating capsule, the capsule being lowered onto the aircraft carrier; along with several photos of an exuberant Shepard after landing; including a shot of Shepard dragging the capsule on a float; and several sailors checking out accommodations in the capsule; [together with] an envelope sent from the Champlain postmarked May 5, 1961 perhaps addressed by Shepard; [and] a telegram sent by NASA on the mission.
