First edition, first state, without the additional text "La Philippinas" added above "Sinus Magnus"; double-page folio map, engraved with old hand-coloring, text in italic type in Latin on one sheet, other sheet verso blank; ownership stamps and marks on verso of blank sheet, marginal paper repairs on verso, matted and framed, 19 1/4 x 15 1/4 in.
N.B. This first issue, published in 1584, was the first western map of China drawn directly from reports, in this case collected by the Portuguese map-maker Ludovicus Georgius [aka: Luis Jorge de Barbuda] (1564-1613?). It is also the earliest printed map to include the Great Wall of China, and the first to have China as its main focus.
