N.B. The text includes literary contributions of Balzac, Janin, Karr, Méry, Soulié, Petrus Borel, Monnier, Nodier; with illustrations by Daumier, Gavarni, Grandville, Monnier, Meissonier and Paquet. The work conveys a wonderfully playful contemporary portrait of French characters and "types," lovingly and mockingly described and portrayed.
