Description:

William Lester Stevens (American, 1888-1969)

Waiting for Breakfast/The Boston Rocker
Signed "W. LESTER STEVENS. N.A./A.W.S." l.r., titled on two unattributed labels affixed to the frame backing paper and in an inscription on the backing board.
Watercolor, gouache, and pencil on paper, sight size 27 x 37 in. (68.6 x 94.0 cm),framed (in a liner).
Condition: Not examined out of frame.
Estimate $1,200-1,800

When the work was unframed to prepare a condition report, it was discovered that what was described as the backing board was actually the reverse of the illustration board on which the painting was made. Condition is good, with some toning and with tack holes in the upper two corners.

Reverse inscribed in pencil "The Boston Rocker/By W. Lester Stevens, N.A. A.W.S." and "Holyoke Museum 1565B" in ink in a different hand. Alternate title of "Waiting for Breakfast" is inscribed on a hanging tag taped to the frame. That title is also used on the unattributed label described above, which incorporates a black and white image of the watercolor and states "Provenance: Donated by the artist, 1966."

Sheet size is 27 3/8 x 37 5/8 in. Frame dimensions are 32 3/4 x 43 inches.
