Description:

Continental Army Line of Battle for West Point, New York, Owned by Major Moses Ashley, 2nd Massachusetts Battalion, c. 1780, laid paper map with layout of the army, showing all of the infantry regiments, dragoons, artillery, and light infantry, with small painted figures of dragoons on each upper side, marked on the top "The Line, or order of Battle of the United States (piece missing) Campaign 1780 Commanded by/His Excellency George (missing)," marked on the opposite side "Moses Ashley Esq./Major Brigade to the 2d/Massachusetts Brigade/in Service United States of/America," lg. 26, ht. 16 1/2 in.

Provenance: The Estate of Susan J. Lyman.

Note: This "line, or order of battle" was probably drawn after Major General Benedict Arnold defected to the British in the summer of 1780. His plan was to surrender West Point to the British, sectioning off eastern New York and the other eastern colonies. After Arnold's escape, George Washington moved troops from New Jersey to this area to protect that vital area of the Hudson River.
Estimate $15,000-25,000

Has some foxing and separation at the folds. One section is missing and has been for many years.
