Model 1895 Krag Saddle Ring Carbine Identified to Trooper Alvin C. Ash, Troop G, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders,
c. 1898, serial number 27892, walnut stock with light cartouche on the left side (worn from use) and a remnant of a circle "P" behind the trigger guard, small compartment in the butt for cleaning rod (not oiler),receiver marked "U.S./1895. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 27892," barrel lg. 22, overall lg. 41 1/4 in.

Note: With this lot comes all of the documentation relating to this gun being issued to trooper Ash, a letter from the Springfield Research Service confirming that serial number 27892 was issued to Troop G and that regimental records confirm that this gun was issued to Alvin C. Ash. Also contains much information on the life of Ash prior to and after the war, as well as his relationship with Teddy Roosevelt. In Roosevelt's book The Rough Riders, he mentions Ash a few times and called him "his favorite horseman." He also mentions Ash being wounded in the wrist by Spanish artillery while with Capron's Battery.

Stock has a few dings and nicks but is in overall very good condition. Steel has honest wear, the action functions properly and the bore is bright and sharp.
