Identified Wallet/Pocketbook Purchased in Boston the Day after the British Evacuated the City, c. 1776, leather and pasteboard wallet with a brass clasp and incised leather lines, inside the wallet is a late 19th century label marked "Pocket-Book/Bought in Boston the day after/the evacuation of the British forces/by Benj. Darling/a soldier of the Revolution," on the bottom interior is an early 19th century label marked "Bought in Boston the/day after the Evacuation/of the British forces by Benj/Darling as soldier of the Revolution," ht. 4 1/4, lg. 6 in.

Provenance: By family descent to the consignor.

Note: Benjamin Darling, from Pembroke, Massachusetts, enlisted in the militia in 1776. He later served in the Artificers and the 4th Massachusetts Regiment, and was discharged in 1780.
