Description:

18th Century Eucharist Bread Iron, France, scroll-tipped tapering handles terminating in a pair of iron plates with one side engraved with sun, moon, five-branch star within a heart, and marked "Jean Houvet," the other iron marked "1788," above the cross with base marked "IHS," lg. 37 in.

Provenance: Calmels Cohen, Andre Breton Collection, April 14th 2003, Lot 3423.

Note: This bread iron was forged to celebrate the wedding of Jean Houvet in 1788. Houvet is a well-known name in the Chartres region in Eure-et-Loire, France, with the family dating back to the mid-16th century.
