Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver Trophy, New York, 1875-91, figure with incised signature "EJS" to foot for Eugene J. Soligny (1832-1901),chaser, with applied lettering to one side reading "BENNETT CUP" and an applied figure of a gentleman holding a rifle to the other, flanked by two hanging game birds suspended by an applied flowerhead with ribbon, ht. 18 in., approx. 101.2 troy oz.
N.B. James Gordon Bennett Jr. (1841-1918) was the only son of the founder of the New York Herald. An avid sportsman, his hobbies including automobiles, sailing, polo, tennis, aviation, and hot-air ballooning. In addition to his own participation, he also organized some of the first events in the United States and commissioned numerous sporting trophies from Tiffany & Co. These trophies and challenge cups, often designed by James H. Whitehouse and chased by Eugene Soligny, were some of the finest pieces produced by the firm at this time. Four such trophies that Bennett sponsored are illustrated in Magnificent Tiffany Silver by John Loring (pp. 87, 90, 104, 115).
