Description:

Pieced and Applique Folk Art Quilt "Scenes of American Life," made by Mrs. Cecil White, Hartford, Connecticut, c. 1925-30, composed of fifty-five vignettes depicting figures engaged in various pursuits, including a bartender serving his patrons, a rodeo star, tennis players, golfers, baseball players, a billiards scene, sweethearts, a man who has climbed up a ladder to his paramour, men in uniform, a man getting his shoes shined, among many other identifiable scenes, all bordered by touring cars, pickup trucks, and steam locomotives, 77 x 66 in.

Provenance: America Hurrah, New York; Mendelsohn Collection; Fred Giampietro; Ricco/Maresca Gallery, New York; to a private Massachusetts collection.
Estimate $40,000-60,000

The quilt has faded slightly, most notably in the red fabrics (the layered "floral" devices and the red border vehicles). There are some minor losses to a very few fabrics, including to four small patches of purple silk. There are a couple of very minor brown stains, and a very few small holes. There are no evident tears or repairs.
