Rotation in Yellows
Signed, dated, and titled "ZOX/1964/..." on a label affixed to the stretcher.
Acrylic on canvas, 63 1/2 x 54 1/2 in. (161.3 x 138.4 cm),unframed.
Condition: Tear repaired u.l., retouch.

Provenance: Acquired from the artist by a Metropolitan Opera singer, New York; to the current private collection.

N.B. Often associated with the New York Color Field or Minimalist painters of the 1960s and 1970s, Larry Zox's works of that era explored asymmetry rather than the rigid compositions of his contemporaries. From 1962 to 1965, Zox produced his Rotation series. The first works in this series were plywood and Plexiglas reliefs with dynamic geometric forms. Zox soon turned to using the same shapes in paintings, with white negative spaces placed between the vibrantly colored polygons. The inscription and label on Rotation in Yellows indicate that the work should hang vertically; however, most works from the series are oriented horizontally, as we have presented the painting here.
Estimate $5,000-7,000

The repair at upper left lies in the section of darkest yellow, just below the horizontal line of fuschia, and measures approximately 8 in. long and 1 3/4 inches at its widest point. There is a section of retouch to the left of the repair that measures approximately 1 1/2 in. long, and another line of retouch at upper right. Additionally, there are scattered tiny spots of retouch and scattered varnish inconsistencies. There are small abrasions with paint losses near the corners at upper left, upper right, and lower right. There are two small canvas deformations near the center of the lower edge. Though the work has recently been cleaned, there is still some dirt that has become embedded in the acrylic paint film.
