'The drama of Apollo 13 began even before the flight was under way. By early April 1970, mission commander James Lovell and his crew, command module pilot Ken Mattingly and lunar module pilot Fred Haise, had trained for almost a year to explore the Moon's Fra Mauro highlands. When the crew was exposed to German measles, NASA doctors feared that Mattingly, the only one of the crew not immune to the illness, might become sick during the mission. Despite Lovell's objections, Mattingly was replaced by his backup, Jack Swigert, just days before launch. The trio left Earth atop a Saturn V booster on April 11, 1970' (Chaikin, Voices, p. 136).
