Description:

Alan Bean (American, b. 1932)
Two close-ups of the descent engine bell of the Lunar Module Intrepid, EVA 1 and EVA 2, Apollo 12, November 1969. The first numbered 'NASA AS12-47-6910' (NASA MSC) in red on the recto u.l. margin; the second with a NASA HQ caption on the verso. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper with 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the verso, and vintage gelatin silver print, image sizes to 7 5/8 x 7 3/4 in. (19.2 x 19.5 cm),unmatted.
Condition: Minor wear at corners of gelatin silver print.

N.B. Bean took the first color photograph during EVA 1 and the second black and white image at the beginning of EVA 2 to document the effects of lunar landing on both the descent stage and the lunar surface. The Lunar Module, surely the clumsiest-looking flying machine ever built, consisted of a descent stage destined to remain on the Moon, and an ascent stage that later carried the crew and samples into lunar orbit (NASA SP-350, chapter 12.2). The NASA negative number for the gelatin silver print is AS12-48-7034.

Literature: Light, plate 52 (second image).
Estimate $400-600
