Description:
Historic Sioux Muslin Winter Count, c. 1930, the highly detailed painting is a later copy, probably depicting the years 1823-1908, based on number 11, "The Year the Stars Fell," eighty-five depictions of important events laid out in five vertical sections, number 59 probably portrays Hunkpapa chief Sitting Bull and his people being taken to their reservation on a steamboat, 115 x 36 in.
Provenance: Included is a copy of a notarized statement: "This Native American story cloth depicting 85 years of Sioux Indian history was given to my late husband, N. Berwyn Lawrence, M.D., by a patient in Colton, CA sometime between 1936-38. It has remained in our family since. 7/6/95."
