Goldsmith Chandlee Surveyor's Compass for A.B. Lane, Virginia, c. 1805, 6 1/2-in. engraved silvered dial with an eight-point rose, stylized fleur-de-lis representing north, dual inset vials, circular table with aperture window scale from 1-16, and counterclockwise operated needle, marked on the southern quadrants "G. Chandlee/A.B. Lane" engraved linear table on the south end of the arm, and screw-mount sights, housed in a shaped and fitted walnut case, lg. 14 in.

Note: Goldsmith Chandlee was a prominent American clock and instrument maker of the 18th and 19th century and was one of the "Six Quaker Clockmakers" referenced in the book of the same title by Edward C. Chandlee. He was born August 18, 1751, in Nottingham, Maryland, and died in Winchester, Virginia, March 4, 1821.
