Identified 43rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers Medal, c. 1864-65, two gold banners with three gold rings, marked "TIGERS/VETERAN" with a silver cross and a gold banner marked "B.L.I./1789/DEATH OR AN HONORABLE LIFE," with a gold tiger in the center, engraved on the silver back "Capt. H. Doane/43rd Reg. Ms. Inf", ht. 2 1/4 in.

Provenance: The collection of Nicholas A. Penachio.

Note: Henry Doane graduated from Harvard Law School in 1859 and in 1862 he became captain in 43rd "Tiger" Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. He served in North Carolina and fought in the battles of Kinston, Whitehall, Goldsboro, siege of Washington. He was mustered out on July 30th, 1863, and returned to his home in Orleans, Massachusetts. In failing health, he died September 2nd, 1865. From his will dated December 10th, 1862, "I give my gun and pistol to my brother, Charles, not doubting that he will use the same, should occasion call, in the defence of liberty and good government."
