Description:

Pair of Pearl-glazed Earthenware Bocage Arbor Figural Groups, England, c. 1815, each with overglaze enamel painted decoration, large oval foliate frames adorned with florets all surrounding figures with a waterfall by their feet, one with a man playing the bagpipes and a woman feeding a squirrel, the other with a man playing the horn as a woman plays the guitar, ht. 9 1/4, 9 3/8 in.

Literature: Similar illustrated in Staffordshire Figures 1780 to 1840, volume I, by M. Schkolne, figure 26.86.
Estimate $1,000-1,500

Bagpipe/squirrel group: minimal repairs and retouch to bocage and with scattered chipping, and loss of a floret; female's arm and horns of bagpipe restored. Scattered flaking to enamel on base and slightly to green on backside.
Horn/guitar group: Numerous chips along the edges of the bocage with minimal leaf restorations. Restored to both instruments and to each of her arms; areas of retouch to some flaking of green enamel.
