Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973)
Jeunesse, 1950, first state of two (Bloch, 675). Signed and dated "Picasso 23Mai50" within the matrix, inscribed "188 1e etat" in pencil on the reverse. Lithograph on Arches paper with watermark, image size 19 7/8 x 25 5/8 in. (50.4 x 65.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Deckled edges, toning, foxing, and staining near edges, handling creases to margins.
Provenance: Fernand Mourlot/Archives of the Atelier Mourlot, Paris, to Eric Mourlot, Boston; purchased from Fletcher/Priest Gallery, Worcester, 1994, by a private Massachusetts collector.
N.B. A photocopy of the invoice accompanies the lot, as does a certificate from Editions Mourlot. There is confusion as to whether there were in fact two states of this work or three (see Gauss, 543-545, for more information),but the state presented here is the one made before the editioned state of 50.

The sheet measures 22 3/8 x 30 1/4 in. None of the toning, foxing, or staining come close to the image. The creases are almost exclusively to the lower margin. some of these are softly pressed, but the pressed ones to not touch the image, and even the unpressed creases only graze the edge of the image.
