In addition to this portrait in profile, Pène du Bois used Force as the central figure in another work, Juliana Force at the Whitney Studio Club, 1921, in the collection of the Whitney Museum. Force forged a strong relationship with the founder of the Whitney Museum, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, beginning in 1914 with their collaborations on the Whitney Studio and the Whitney Studio Club (predecessors to the museum). The two women worked to build an interest in American art through exhibitions, lectures, and classes, and to create a thriving community for contemporary American artists.
