N.B. The lot is accompanied by letters discussing the painting from William H. Gerdts (dated November 21, 1984) and Judith O'Toole (dated February 16, 1988). Both indicate that the work may be authentic, described as "highly likely" by Gerdts, but also discuss the possibility that Roesen produced his prolific still lifes with the aid of a workshop and that the artist had many students and followers also working in his genre. William Gerdts suggests in his letter that the painting dates from the 1850s.
Estimate $7,000-9,000
Restored tears to right 1/3 side of canvas, with more retouch along the bottom edge.
William Gerdts's letter mentions a canvas stamp from "Dodge" but that is no longer visible and may be hidden now by the support, which is itself backed with waxed canvas.
