N.B. We would like to thank Charles Lanagan for his kind assistance cataloging this lot.
The work is accompanied by a one-page report from the Smithsonian Institution prepared by Rowland Lyon, Curator, dated December 14, 1965, confirming the scene as Dundee Harbor, Scotland, painted by the English artist, Samuel Scott. The painting was said to have been part of the collection of Mr. Sumner Wells at his estate in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
Estimate $10,000-15,000
Although it does not appear that the painting has been conserved recently, there is old retouch and some varnish inconsistencies primarily to the sky, as well as along the bottom following a horizontal stretcher bar mark. The pigment of the retouch has aged differently from the original, and as a result is fairly noticeable in the sky. There is skinning likely from overcleaning that can been see in some of the rigging and in the figures on the pier in the center. The townscape seems to be largely untouched and retains a great amount of detail.
The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Condition requests can be obtained via email (lot inquiry button) or by telephone to the appropriate gallery location (Boston/617.350.5400 or Marlborough/508.970.3000).
