Description:
French School, 19th Century
Orientalist Portrait/An Ottoman Soldier with His Horse
Signed and dated indistinctly l.r., inscribed "M...Valerio" in while chalk on the reverse, incised "TACHET/BREVETE/A PARIS" on the reverse.
Oil on panel, 12 3/4 x 9 1/2 in. (32.6 x 24.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Scattered retouch, fine craquelure, minor frame abrasions.
N.B. The faint artist's signature is not legible, and if actually dated, it may read "48." The chalk inscription with the name "Valerio" on the back may possibly refer to Théodore Valerio (French, 1819-1879),although the signature on the front does not appear to conform to that name.
Estimate $500-700
The work is on a thin wood panel which is backed with a middle layer of wood pieces and finished with the inscribed panel that forms the back.
