William Meyerowitz (American, 1887-1981)
Five Etchings of Supreme Court Justices. All signed "Wm Meyerowitz" in pencil beneath the images l.r. Four of the portraits identified in the plates as Louis D. Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, Owen J. Roberts, and Harlan F. Stone; Benjamin Cardozo, perhaps an unfinished work, is identified only in an inscription on the frame backing paper. Plate sizes to 9 7/8 x 7 7/8 in., Stone and Roberts unframed, others framed. Condition: Toning, Brandeis with scattered stains, not examined out of frames or wrapping.
N.B. In the early 1930s, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes commissioned William Meyerowitz to do his portrait, and subsequently, c. 1935, Meyerowitz etched a series of portraits of the justices of the United States, from Oliver Wendell Holmes to William O. Douglas.
