Gerrit Hondius (American/Dutch, 1891-1970)

Portrait Head of a Sailor, South Portland, Maine. Signed "G. HONDIUS" l.r., inscribed "No. 8" in pencil on the reverse. Oil on paper, 11 1/4 x 9 3/8 in., framed. Condition: Toning to the reverse, sheet with perforated bottom edge, affixed to window mat with tape around the perimeter of the reverse.

N.B. Although Hondius is associated with Provincetown, Massachusetts, the subject of this portrait is described as from the South Portland, Maine, waterfront in a handwritten note from a former owner affixed to the frame backing paper. The note also states that the painting was a gift to him from the artist's wife, Winnie, when the owner was at Camp Quannacut, Pine Bush, New York (no year given).
