First edition, large octavo, illustrated with thirteen full-page plates (including the frontispiece) and additional wood-engraved text illustrations, ex libris Valentine Mott Francis (1834-1907),a Rhode Island physician, with his bookplate pasted inside the front board; bound in full contemporary textured cloth, with blind-tooling decorations on the boards, the spine stamped and decorated in gilt; slightly rubbed, with some sun fading, contents with occasional foxing, 9 1/8 x 5 3/4 in.
Ross's is one of the most comprehensive account of the whaling industry in the 1840s and likely a source used by Melville.
