First edition, quarto, translated chiefly by Gregory Martin (c. 1542-1582), title page printed within a type ornament border, bound in full late 19th century crushed dark blue morocco, gilt extra; surface scuffs, ex library, with a stamp on the title and a few in the text, generally a large, clean copy, STC 2884; Darlow & Moule 177; Pforzheimer 68, 8 3/4 x 6 1/4 in.
The Douay–Rheims Bible is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate prepared by Catholic priests from England living in exile. The English College in Douai was established at about the same time Elizabeth I's arrival on the throne represented a re-imposition of Protestant rule after the departure of her Catholic half-sister Mary I.
