Description:
A Directory for the Publique Worship of God, throughout the Three Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Together with an Ordinance of Parliament for Taking away of the Book of Common Prayer. London: for Evan Tyler, Alexander Fifield, Ralph Smith, and John Field, 1644. Quarto, rebacked, lacking the first blank and final leaf, which contained a table of contents, headlines closely trimmed, 7 x 5 1/4 in.
The Directory for Public Worship (called the Westminster Directory in Scotland) is a liturgical manual approved by Parliament early in 1645 during the Westminster Assembly to replace the Book of Common Prayer, which was seen as too heavily derived from the Catholic Mass. The Directory is a practical handbook of pastoral care, advice on the preparation of sermons, and other practical information primarily sourced more directly from scripture.
