Clinton, DeWitt (1769-1828) Autograph Letter Signed, Albany, 15 July 1824. Wove paper bifolium with self-envelope, inscribed over one page, address panel on verso of outer leaf, black seal present. To Dr. James Ellsworth DeKay (1792-1851) a founder of the Lyceum of Natural History in New York, labeled "Private," sending an ornithological specimen: a new species of swallow and its nest (not present). "You can compare the specimens with the descriptions and make any alterations, retrenchments, and additions that you may think proper. All descriptions that are regulated by mixed colours are liable to great latitude. In my designation of the colours, I have followed Werner's nomenclature of colours as delineated by Palnik Syme, Edinburgh, 1814." Toning, old folds, 9 1/2 x 7 3/4 in.
