Description:
Attributed to Thomas Sully (American, 1783-1872)
Woman in White, Possibly the Artist's Wife, Sarah. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 24 x 18 in., framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, fine craquelure, surface grime.
N.B. This work, which appears to be unfinished, has the stylistic hallmarks of Sully's portraits, especially the shadow under the nose and the treatment of the tendrils of hair. The head wrap was also a typical Sully device. The sitter resembles the artist's wife, Sarah, whose image is known from earlier portraits. That this is unfinished is suggested by the incomplete glazing in the neck and bodice.
Estimate $20-200
