Description:
British School, 18th/19th Century
Portrait of a Lady, Described as Miss Dalrymple Elphinstone (Margaret Dalrymple Horn Elphinstone)
Attributed to Sir Henry Raeburn on a fragment of canvas affixed to the back of the frame, on a fragmentary label on the stretcher, and on a presentation plaque.
Oil on canvas, 29 1/2 x 24 in. (75.0 x 61.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, surface grime.
N.B. Despite the notations mentioned above, current research has not been able to attribute this portrait to Raeburn or to confirm the sitter's identity. Although Raeburn is known to have painted Lady Dalrymple (now in the Tate Collection) and Elizabeth Dalrymple, the catalog of portraits created by J.L. Caw (published in 1901) does not list a portrait of Margaret. The sitter does not resemble other likenesses of Margaret Dalrymple Elphinstone, when compared to documented portraits in English collections.
Estimate $800-1,200
