Provenance: A private Rhode Island collection, Skinner, Inc., American and European Works of Art, May 14, 2004, Sale 2236, Lot 343, to the current private New York collection.

N.B. Originally working as a lawyer, Hitchcock left his law practice in 1879 to pursue a painting career. He started his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris and then moved on to other academies in London, Dusseldorf, and The Hague. Rarely returning to the United States after that, Hitchcock became known for his views of peasant woman and flowers, marked by bright, radiant light - a style highly influenced by the Impressionists. In 1909, Hitchcock was elected as an associate member of the National Academy of Design and was the first American to be admitted into the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Vienna.
