N.B. One of the most prolific and celebrated fashion photographers of the 20th century, Irving Penn created a series of minimalist studio portraits that were noted for capturing and isolating unique aspects of his subjects' personalities. In 1948, Penn pushed together two studio flats to create a sharper than 90 degree corner into which he placed his sitters. Some lean casually against the walls or take on interesting poses while sitting. Others, like Duchamp, appear wedged into the claustrophobic space, which Penn described as surprisingly comforting to his subjects. For his "corner" portraits, Penn photographed a wide range of artists, writers, dancers, socialites, musicians, and other celebrities, including Truman Capote, Joe Louis, and the Duchess of Windsor.
