N.B. After his move from Budapest to Paris in 1925, André Kertész spent a decade photographing unusual juxtapositions and scenes found wandering the city's streets. He also experimented with optical distortions. In 1933 he was commissioned to create a series of nudes for the French satirical magazine Le Sourire. Using mirrors and a camera fitted with a special lens, he created some 200 images of female forms--some identifiable, others beyond recognition--that float between representation and abstraction. While not an active participant in the Surrealist movement, Kertész's disquieting nude distortions are infused with its tenets.
