Inscribed "Doct S. Tompkins/Painted by Wm. M. Prior March 28 18[-]2" on the reverse.
Oil on board, 19 1/2 x 15 1/2 in., in likely original ogee molded and parcel-gilt frame.
Condition: Good overall.
Note: Included in the lot (in a small plastic sleeve fixed to the back of the frame) are business cards for New Bedford Druggists and Apothecaries Jas. E. Blake and Frank E. Hadley, which indicate that Dr. Tompkins' Vegetable Bitters and Cough Syrup were both available solely at their establishment at 64 North Middle Street.
